This Privacy Policy applies to the Safe Journal mobile app. Purchases of physical products through safejournal.com may involve separate checkout, payment, shipping, and ecommerce providers.
Our promise
Safe Journal is private by default. AI is always a choice.
Free journaling stays local and account-free. Your journal entries are encrypted on your device. If you choose account backup, a copy is also saved to your account — see "Account backup" below. We do not sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps or websites.
What we collect
Email address. If you create an account, we collect your email address so you can sign in with a one-time code. Free journaling does not require an account.
Journal content. Your journal entries are stored encrypted on your device. Journal entries stored only on your device are never uploaded. If you choose to use account backup (see "Account backup" below), a copy of your journal is saved to your Safe Journal account. If you are a Plus subscriber and explicitly use an AI feature, the specific content needed for that feature is sent over a secure connection to our backend (a Supabase Edge Function) and then to our AI provider, Anthropic, to generate the result. AI does not run in the background, and content is only processed when you choose to use an AI feature.
Purchase information. If you subscribe to Safe Journal Plus, Apple and our subscription provider, RevenueCat, process subscription status and purchase information so we can unlock Plus features.
Limited operational data. We may process limited technical information needed for app functionality, security, rate limiting, abuse prevention, and service reliability.
Account backup (optional)
Free journaling works without an account, and your entries stay only on your device unless you choose otherwise.
If you sign in and turn on account backup (or tap "Back up now"), a copy of your journal is saved to your Safe Journal account so you can restore it later — for example on a new device. Account backup is optional and only available when you are signed in. Backups may include your journal text, moods and emotions, prompts and answers, and optional city and weather tags.
Account backups are protected by your sign-in and standard security controls: they are transmitted over encrypted connections, stored encrypted at rest, and access is restricted to your account. Account backups are not end-to-end encrypted, which is what makes reliable restore possible.
You are in control of your backup:
- Back up manually anytime, or turn on Automatic backup.
- Restore your backup into an empty journal on a device.
- Delete your account backup anytime from Profile — this removes the backup from your account without deleting the entries on your device.
- Deleting your Safe Journal account also deletes your account backup.
AI features
Safe Journal Plus includes optional AI features. AI only processes selected content when you explicitly use an AI feature.
When you use an AI feature, the content needed for that feature is sent over a secure connection to our backend (a Supabase Edge Function) and then to Anthropic to generate the result. Anthropic states that data sent through its API is not used to train its models by default.
Free journaling never uses AI.
Third-party service providers
Safe Journal may use the following providers to operate the app:
- Supabase — authentication, backend services, AI request routing, optional journal account backup storage, and entitlement-related app functionality
- Apple — App Store payments and subscriptions
- RevenueCat — subscription management
- Anthropic — optional AI processing when you use an AI feature
These providers process information only as needed to provide app functionality.
Data deletion
You can erase your journal data from your device in the app. Erasing data on a device removes journal data from that device only — it does not delete an account backup. If you use account backup, you can delete your account backup separately from Profile; this removes the backup from your account without deleting the entries on your device.
If you have an account, you can also delete your Safe Journal account. Deleting your account removes your Safe Journal account and your account backup from our servers, and erases journal data on that device.
Deleting your account does not cancel your Safe Journal Plus subscription or delete purchase records held by Apple or RevenueCat. Subscriptions must be managed through the App Store.
No ads, no sale, no tracking
Safe Journal does not sell your personal information. We do not use your journal content for advertising. We do not track you across other apps or websites.
Children
Safe Journal is not directed to children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above.
